In 2012 I obtained my first PhD in philosophy of religion from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom tackling the issue on religious pluralism from the perspective of Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism. In July of 2015, I successfully defended my second PhD on the religiosity of Classical Confucianism in light of Heidegger and Ricœur’s phenomenology of religion at National Chengchi University in Taiwan.
I am a native Chinese speaker with an excellent English ability, and I was very well trained in Classical Chinese at the National Taiwan Normal University where I received my BA in Chinese in 2000 and MA in education (philosophy of education) in 2004. I have also acquired German and Japanese to strengthen my study skills and broaden my research horizon.
The main concern of my research over the past ten years has been Confucianism, especially its modern development and interaction with the West. Besides my major work in Classical Confucian religiosity in my Chinese PhD thesis, I have worked on Confucian figures such as Tang Chun-I and Mou Tsung-san. Most recently, I have also focused on the philosophy of education, especially on the Chinese philosophy of education and its relevance to the modern times and have published several relevant journal articles in Chinese.
I have significant experience teaching at secondary and tertiary levels. I have over seven years of high school teaching experience in Chinese language and literature. Moreover, I have worked as adjunct lecturer and adjunct assistant professor, teaching at the undergraduate level since 2007. Benefited from my academic background, my classes were conducted with a particular focus on or in comparison with classical Chinese philosophical and religious texts. For example, I have discussed the interesting similarity between the discourse on human nature in “the Creed of a Savoyard Priest” of Rousseau’s Émile and Mencius’ theory of human nature, helping students critically reflect on the respective religious and philosophical backgrounds of these authors.
I worked at the Department of Education of the National Taichung University of Education as an Assistant Professor from August 2016 to July 2020. I joined the Graduate Institute of Philosophy of the National Central University as an Assistant Professor in August 2020. I was promoted to Associate Professor in August 2023.
